What WordAnalyzer measures
Frequently Asked Questions
How does WordAnalyzer count words?
WordAnalyzer splits your text on whitespace and counts non-empty tokens. Hyphenated words (e.g. "well-known") count as one word. Numbers count as words. The count updates in real time as you type — no submit button needed.
What is the Flesch Reading Ease score?
Flesch Reading Ease is a formula that measures how easy a text is to read, scored from 0 to 100. Higher scores (70+) mean the text is easy to read — think plain English, short sentences, common words. Scores below 30 indicate dense, technical, or academic writing. The formula is: 206.835 − 1.015 × (words/sentences) − 84.6 × (syllables/words).
What is the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level?
The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level converts the reading ease formula into a US school grade level. A grade level of 8 means the text is suitable for an 8th grader (about 13–14 years old). Most general-audience writing targets grade 7–9. Legal or scientific documents often score grade 14+.
What is the Gunning Fog Index?
The Gunning Fog Index estimates the years of formal education needed to understand the text on a first reading. A Fog score of 12 corresponds to a US high school senior. It penalizes long sentences and words with 3 or more syllables. Fog scores above 17 are considered difficult even for college graduates.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time is calculated by dividing the word count by the average adult reading speed of 238 words per minute (wpm). Speaking time uses 130 wpm, the average conversational speaking pace. On the Reading Time Calculator page you can adjust both speeds with a slider to match your specific audience.
Does WordAnalyzer store my text?
No. All analysis happens entirely in your browser using client-side JavaScript. Your text is never sent to any server and is not stored, logged, or shared. Clearing the textarea immediately removes it from memory.
